360°
Virtual Tours Photography
360° Virtual Tour Photography by Michael Thoeny.

About
I have been shooting 360° Virtual Tours since 2006.
I started out because my wife was getting into Real
Estate and there was a need to add Virtual Tours for her
properties. In 2008 I launched
360bc.ca
to provide these services to the public.
360° Virtual Tours are created using a series of
digital photos stitched together into a panoramic photo
using specialized software and then presented in a viewer on the web. The
web viewer can be QuickTime based, Java or Flash (there are
others as well but these are the most common). A common
problem with panoramic photos is the differential in
light between what is in front of you and behind you.
Think about a sunny day under a tree; the exposure in
one direction could be vastly different by the time you
are shooting a full 180° behind you. A 360°
panoramic photo needs to have a constant exposure
setting to blend well but this could result in over and
under exposed portions of your image. The solution to
this is called HDR (High Dynamic Range) which involves
taking multiple shots (3 typically) of your subject at
various exposure settings. Then using software the
images are both stitched and blended to give you an
image that is exposed correctly for both light and dark
areas of your photo.
There are lots of Blogs and Websites out there that
can guide you into learning how to create Panoramic
images and Virtual Tours. Perhaps if I get motivated
enough I will write my own instructions one day.
